“Gardens”
日本庭園はとても美しいですよね。
(Japanese gardens are very beautiful.)
自然の風景を手本として、池や樹木、石や苔などの様々な要素が折り重なり造形されています。
(They are modeled after natural landscapes, various elements such as ponds, trees, stones, and mosses are folded and sculpted.)
日本のもつ美意識や自然に対する価値観を表現しており、季節の移り変わりやありのままの自然を楽しむことに重きが置かれています。
(It expresses the Japanese sense of beauty and values of nature, with an emphasis on enjoying the changing seasons and nature as it is.)
一方で、西洋庭園は花や緑が基調となっているものが多く、花壇や生垣を左右対称にデザインして、自然界にはない人工的な美しさを追及しているのが特徴です。
(Western gardens, on the other hand, are often based on flowers and greenery, and are characterized by symmetrical designs of flowerbeds and hedges, pursuing an artificial beauty that cannot be found in the natural world.)
日本庭園と西洋庭園、それぞれの美しさがありますが、２つの大きな違いの１つは、何を「美」としているかです。
(Japanese gardens and Western gardens each have their own beauty, but one of the major differences between the two is what is considered “beauty.)
日本庭園は変化も含めた自然の風景を美としているのに対し、西洋庭園は自然を左右対称や幾何学的形状に加工して作られた人工的な秩序のある風景を美としています。
(While Japanese gardens are characterized by the beauty of natural scenery, including its changes, Western gardens are characterized by the beauty of artificially ordered landscapes created by processing nature into symmetrical or geometrical shapes.)
私自身が興味深いと思う違いは、「庭を楽しむ視点」です。
(The difference that I personally find interesting is “the perspective of enjoying the garden”.)
日本庭園は外側から眺めて楽しむスタイルが一般的です。
(Japanese gardens are generally enjoyed from the outside.)
素敵な日本庭園のある家では、例えば縁側のように、庭を眺めるための特別な場所を設けていたりします。
(In a house with a nice Japanese garden, for example, there is a special place for viewing the garden, such as the veranda.)
スケールの大きい庭園の場合、周りに作られた小道から眺めたり、ボートから眺めたりできる庭園もあります。
(For larger scale gardens, some gardens can be viewed from paths built around them or from boats.)
つまり、日本庭園は外側から眺めるスタイルが主流のように感じます。
(In other words, Japanese gardens seem to be dominated by the style of viewing from the outside.)
西洋庭園は、人の通れる小道やベンチ、ガゼボ（西洋風の東屋）などが庭の一部として組み込まれており、庭の中を散歩したり、お茶を飲んだり、読書をしてリラックスしたりすることを念頭に置いて作られているものが多いです。
(Many Western gardens are designed with a walkway, bench, or gazebo (Western-style pavilion) as part of the garden, and are intended for strolling, drinking tea, reading, and relaxing in the garden.)
外から眺めても美しい西洋庭園ですが、庭の中からでも日常的に楽しめる。
(The Western garden is beautiful when viewed from the outside, but it can also be enjoyed on a daily basis from within the garden.)
外側から眺める日本庭園と、内側からも楽しめる西洋庭園。
(The Japanese garden can be viewed from the outside and the Western garden can be enjoyed from the inside.)
